Raising lounging hens around the homestead Raising lounging hens

Lounging hens are an focal point in any homestead. We’ve got our first chickens about five years ago, so we enjoy raising them. I actually do possess a boy that isn’t keen on chickens (we’d an average rooster a couple of years back that attacked him several occasions). But typically, they’ve been very valuable to the homesteading journey. When you are chickens, you are feeling just like a real homesteader! Then you definitely want ducks, rabbits, turkeys, etc. That is why they call chickens the “gateway animal”.

You are able to raise chickens for eggs or meat. Basically we have selected combination wild birds, we’ll have them mostly for eggs until they get too old and have to be culled.

The coming year we’re wishing to begin meat chickens, however for this publish we’ll concentrate on raising lounging hens and roosters.

Chickens are great for a lot of things around the homestead: eggs, meat, fertilizer, bug elimination, tilling and entertainment.

When can chicks proceed to the coop?

Our newborn chicks we spoken about in this post just lately moved to the coop. When your chickens can stand the outdoors temperature and they’ve their “real” down, it’s time to allow them to go outdoors using the other chickens.

Because we lost our chickens (only one that people gave to some friend so she wouldn’t be lonely) to some fox within the fall, we didn’t have older chickens within the coop. They’ve the area all privately.

But, if you have older chickens inside your coop, you have to provide them with space to get accustomed to the older wild birds first.

This can be done by 50 percent ways:

  1. Leave the chicks within the cage and hang it within the coop using the other wild birds. This way they are able to get accustomed to one another, however the chicks are a few what protected against the larger wild birds.
  2. Place these questions separate coop or atleast separate them by chicken wire in the bigger wild birds for any couple of days until they get accustomed to one another.

In either case, once the wild birds get became a member of together, a pecking order must be established. Usually, the more youthful wild birds can get pecked a couple of occasions after which enter line in the finish from the order. But, just incase, keep an eye on them for that first couple of days for harsh treatment.

Exactly what does a great chicken house need?

  • Access – There must be atleast 2 doorways for your coop (choice for you and something for the chickens). This will make the coop simple to clean for you personally and simple to obtain interior and exterior for that chickens.
  • Nesting Boxes- There must be atleast 1 nesting box for each 4 hens. Hens really produce better should they have to compete for box space.
  • Ventilation-Your coop must have good mix-ventilation to maintain your chickens healthy. In case your coop is airtight, it’ll get stinky and may cause health issues for that wild birds.
  • Insulation- Insulation within the coop (particularly in cold winters) can help keep your chickens inside a healthy temperature range.
  • Lighting – There must be home windows inside your coop. As discussed below, hens need some light to be able to lay regularly.
  • Roosts – Chickens choose to sit and sleep on roosts, so supplying many roosting spots within the coop can make them happy.
  • Feeders & Waterers – Make certain your chickens get access to good food and water that is clean every single day. Within the hot several weeks, you may want to refill water more often than once each day. Within the cold several weeks, make certain your water doesn’t freeze overnight.
  • Outdoors Run or Safe Place to The Opportunity – You must have a run mounted on your coop or perhaps an area the hens can securely the opportunity throughout the day. Make certain there’s a fenced area to allow them to roam which if they’re free varying they’ve somewhere to visit if predators appear (including large overhead predators).

How in the event you feed them?

Much like baby chicks, older chickens need food, water and shelter to thrive.

When you’re raising you have animals, an advantage is you can control what sort of food they eat. Because the things they eat eventually you’ll eat too.

Therefore, you need to feed the very best for your chickens to obtain healthier chickens and eggs for the dinner.

  1. You are able to feed them organic or regular chicken feed in the store.
  2. You are able to allow them to the opportunity for his or her food (within the warmer several weeks).
  3. They are able to eat kitchen and garden scraps (aside from anything about this list).
  4. You may also help make your own chicken feed (check out this recipe).

The number of eggs are you able to anticipate getting?

The typical quantity of eggs a hen will lay is a each day (in her own prime). This could vary based on age, breed and outdoors factors.

What conditions have to be suitable for egg lounging?

Together with genetics, a hen needs 4 things for optimal egg production:

  • Protein – A hen will need enough protein in her own diet to put eggs. You ought to be be either purchasing a egg layer feed at the shop, or offering extra protein by means of bugs, oyster shells, etc.
  • Light – Hens need 15 hrs of sunshine for optimal egg production. Throughout the winter several weeks, egg production usually goes lower and may sometime stop completely. You are able to supplement light within the coop over these short days to carry on egg production. You will find people on sides of this debate also it can get heated (no pun intended). I’ll save that for an additional blog publish.
  • Stress – Happy chickens produce healthy eggs. Chickens under stress may lay less. If kids chase the chickens with sticks or perhaps a predator has lately attempted to fight the coop, production will most likely go lower (atleast for any couple of days).
  • Temperature – Extreme temperatures may also decrease egg production. Optimal temperature for lounging is 50-80 levels F. Within the summer time, you are able to awesome off your hens with shade, ice and fans. During the cold months, you can preserve the coop warm having a heat lamp and deep, thick bedding. You can include a heat lamp, but be cautious about fire danger within the coop.

How frequently in the event you collect eggs?

You need to collect eggs atleast daily. You shouldn’t leave eggs within the nesting boxes for too lengthy because they may be walked on, pooped on or freeze during the cold months time.

Where do you turn for those who have a broody hen?

Some hens go broody (take a seat on several eggs to be able to hatch chicks). This really is great for those who have a rooster and also you want baby chicks.

Otherwise, you’ll have to break her from the habit before it will get too much along. She will not be happy, but it must be done.

If you would like chicks, separate the broody hen and her eggs to a higher where she will be sheltered and given while she sits on her behalf eggs. Twenty-one days later (if all goes well) you’ll have newborn chicks in your homestead.

Let’s say I’ve got a rooster?

When you are getting newborn chicks, the cool thing is you will get a rooster or more inside a batch (even should they have been sexed at the shop).

Benefits of roosters:

  1. They’ll safeguard your hens from predators.
  2. Roosters are actually pretty.
  3. Those are the romantic depiction of existence around the farm.
  4. They will help you to breed for baby chicks later on.

Disadvantages to roosters:

  1. Some roosters can be very mean. They might attack young children or perhaps adults.
  2. They are able to crow whatsoever hrs from the night and morning. I previously had one which prefer to stand outdoors our bed room window and crow all day lengthy.
  3. Roosters seem to wish to mate using the hens a great deal. They’ll jump on the top from the hens making a scene fairly frequently.
  4. Roosters eat food but don’t produce eggs (cost/benefit analysis may be required).
  5. If you reside in city limits, you might not legally have the ability to keep the rooster. You have to seek advice from your area ordinances.
  6. If you opt to cull them, make certain you’re doing so when they’re fairly youthful. An average old rooster takes some time within the pressure oven to get fit to consume.

GUINEA FOWL ON THE HOMESTEAD

Video COMMENTS:

Butterfrog Farm: I had Guinea’s a couple years ago, I ordered pizza one day and they chased the delivery guy back to his car and he refused to ever come out here again. It was worth having to go get our own pizza to see that kid running back to his car hard as he could go with those birds hot on his feet. I’ll give him credit though, he held that pizza over his head all the way back! I’m not sure how much of that was being guard guinea’s and how much was them wanting the pizza he had lol.

46 Degrees North: +Butterfrog Farm lol

Robin Burk: Butterfrog Farm

Doris Mair: Doug!!!…You look so bored and preoccupied!…Come on man…..GET HAPPY!..LOL

MotherOfManyHorses: +Doris Mair Yeah, he looked like he really wasn’t into the Guineas. LOL

carlos pomales: Doris Mair it’s the normal amish look lol

Mitch Heywood: Guineas are great watchdogs. Mine make a lot of noise whenever they see a fox & now as soon as the dogs hear the guineas…..canine mayhem!\nOf course it’s not always a fox but trying to explain to the dogs the guineas are screaming at the ginger cat….lol.\nThey don’t scream at any of the other farm cats just the fox coloured one!

Tim Caldwell: Guinea or Guinness both are pretty awesome.

Top Dog obedience: You dont have electricty but you have a video camera?

Logic Snipe: Hens: “Pot-rack! Pot-rack!” Roosters: “Git baaaaack, back back back back back!” We’ve kept 30-50 on hand for many years. Don’t have the heart to eat them, but would if hungry enough! A far finer bird than chickens IMHO. Monogamous (except in extenuating circumstances like four roosters and one hen :-)), and much more modest than chickens, at least ours are. Neither of us have ever been an eye witness to guineas mating and we’re around them all the time. The only time we got a peek into their bedroom was a one off photo of them mating on one of our trail cameras. They keep private things private haha, unlike a chicken who will go at any old hen any old time, spectators welcome! And any guinea I know would be stunned and appalled at the very idea of canabalizing another guinea! Chickens, not so much. Yes, guineas are a giant leap up in nobility from chickens. We laugh at their insane chasing and cry when special ones die. Chickens…not so much.
